What is PVPI ?

Povidone-iodine is an unstable complex formed by the complexation of surfactant and iodine. It is an iodophor external disinfectant. It is a yellow-brown to red-brown amorphous powder at room temperature and is easily soluble in water or ethanol. Among them, 80-90% of the bound iodine can be depolymerized into free iodine, with a large concentration, strong bactericidal power, odorless, non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and low toxicity. It is a broad-spectrum fungicide that can kill viruses, bacteria, spores, fungi, and protozoa. It can kill all kinds of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) within 1 minute at a concentration of 15ppm. It takes a long time to kill Mycobacterium tuberculosis and 1.5 hours to kill fungi (Bacillus subtilis). It requires a higher concentration and a longer time to kill spores of black mutants and spores of Bacillus cereus; it can destroy hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in 10 minutes at a concentration of 150ppm. In addition to skin disinfection, this product can also be used for the disinfection of metal medical equipment, food utensils, etc. It is usually red or amber at the concentration used for disinfection. It can be directly used on the skin and meninges of the incision site of surgical patients, and can also be used for external washing in obstetrics and gynecology and urology. When its concentration drops below 10 ppm, it becomes white or light yellow and loses its bactericidal activity.
